Good morning-

I have a 16YO QH gelding. Over the last few days he has developed a dry hacking cough. He was diagnosed with allergies and prelim. COPD last year by my vet- I understand all the implications of this and have done my best to manage it thus far. I know that the cough he has right now is not characteristic of what he typically displays ( an initial cough to clear his lungs out when we begin riding). Instead, the cough seems un-prompted, he just does it whenever.

It has been very dry here- they say we are in near drought conditions- so I have taken this into consideration as well.

I would have attributed the cough to heightened allergic reactions to the dry weather, but then yesterday I noticed a clumpy yellow stream of snot pouring from his left nostril. (He usually has a clear trickle that I know is from allergies).
***Is this yellow stuff what you would classify as "purulent"?

Additionally, I did notice 1X last week where he had a tiny bit of bloody snot in the same nostril-it was so small, like when a human blows their nose a little too hard- His temp. is normal, as is his respiratory rate- I listened to his lungs, but it was unremarkable-. He is ravenous when it comes to grass(not out of the ordinary) but does not seem as interested in the hay, which incidentally is the last of last year's bales- not apparently overly moldy, but I wonder....

He seems to be more tired, too.

Here's the last thing, its Saturday, and my vet is closed. I will definitely be calling first thing Monday morning, but in the meantime, if I could get any more information it would be helpful!
Thanks, Dr. O.

A purulent exudate is one containing a lot WBC's and usually associated with infection. This time of year we also see a lot of noses that are yellow-snotty looking with pollen. Your cavalier attitude towards moldy hay does need an adjustment however, see Equine Diseases » Respiratory System » Heaves & Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

I definitely need a review, and will check the article again.

Thanks, Dr. O.!
