My 18 yr old mare started coughing about a week after I moved her into a different pasture. She is out 24/7 on grass hasn't had hay since winter. She was coughing for about a week before I got a Vet to see her. Took her to the Vet, he said lungs sound clear and wanted to check her throat for any problems, So he scoped her and didn't see anything other than some inflammation. Said she probably just has allergies. He gave her a shot of Depo Medrol and told me the coughing should stop in about 3 days.I also moved out of the new pasture and back to the old one. It took about 4 days for the coughing to stop totally. So could this be the start of Heaves and should I be careful with feeding hay this coming winter? Or could it be something in the one pasture that is her problem?

Without recent exposure to hay molds, heaves seems unlikely. If you would like to check the pasture idea leave her out until the Depo wears off, about one month, and then put her back in the pasture to see if it starts back up the coughing.
