I have a 2yo standardbred race horse that has a large swollen area on her underside back near her utters. A few things - she had active strangles (I had 8 in my barn with it) with abcesses/fever/snots but that has been cleared for several weeks. two days ago all of a sudden she didn't eat her feed and had a fever of 103.2 again - and a LITTLE bit of snots coming out - so I was watching her carefully again. Fever went away the next day, still has a tiny trickly of colored mucos coming out but now this swelling down on her belly near her utter. There was no signs of it yesterday - it is very tender to touch, as she wants to kick out at me when I try. She has no fever (99.1) but is irritated when she things you are going to touch it. Any clue?? I do not see any other swellings at this point in time on her body.

Welcome Karolyn,
Ventral midline edema is a very common event in horses and can range from something as minor as fly bite reactions (common) to as serious as heart disease (uncommon). As to a relation to the recent bout of strangles possibly an immune related vasculitis but usually this swelling occurs in the legs. I don't see anything that helps differentiate these in your post. For more on what to look for when examining these swellings to get to a possible cause see, HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Swellings / Localized Infection / Abscesses » Diagnosing and Assessing Swellings in Horses.
