Discussion on Small pupils

I have a horse who has very small pupils as compared to his herd mates. They almost disappear in reaction to light. The eyes are not teary or red, and he does not to be suffering any pain or discomfort. He also seems to see normally in normal light. The only thing I have noticed is a tendency to balk when being moved from a well lit area to a darker one. This horse is now 22 years old, and I have had him for 16 years. He has never been sick or injured, and all of this is relatively recent.
Does anyone have any idea of what could cause this? Is there anything that I can and/or should do about it?

Hello Dan,
Dan, if this is a recent change you might want to have it checked out. Assuming something abnormal is going on, some of the rule outs might for bilateral acute miosis would be 1) bilateral damage to the brain, 2) toxic / pharmacological effects, or 3) idiopathic as in a partial Horner's SynDrOme episode.
What is the breed and coat / eye color of this horse? I tried to figure it out from your profile but 2 horses are about this age.

Hi DrO,
The horse is a chestnut quarter horse, with brown eyes. He is not on any current medication, and has not suffered any injury to his head. Can’t completely rule out his having consumed something toxic, but I´m pretty careful about checking out the pastures, and of course all of the horses have been in the same pastures and eaten the same hay. To be honest, I don’t know exactly how long the pupil phenomenon has been around. I just noticed it on Friday, but it is definitely less than a year. The balking at going into poorly lit areas has been happening for about a month.
