My TB gelding, 20 yo scratched his cornea 3 weeks ago. Our vet came out immediately, stained the eye, had atropine put in, and prescribed bute and neosporin eye ointment 3 times daily. On day 5 after some up and down days of improvement, I had the vet return to check on the healing. It seemed two other (vertical) scratches were made into the eye likely from the application of ointment. My vet has come out several times during the following 10 days to ensure the eye was healing ok and to stain the eye. It is looking better but currently has some white almost clear pus in the corner and the conjunctiva at the lower inner eyelid seems reddish to me. Now. one week after the last vet visit (5th time), his eye is still tearing but the cloudiness in the pupil is reducing. His eye is still not open 100% and I notice my horse is staying in his stall rather than hang out in his paddock. I am still applying ointment my way (clean finger not the tube in the eye!). Given my vet has said the two newest corneal scratches looked good and were almost totally healed, and I worrying for nothing? I have had my horse for 8 months and in that time his eye has always teared despite having been flushed several times.

Welcome Pat, Without examining the eye I cannot say if things are going well. However corneal wounds often require more than 3 weeks to heal if they are deep enough to have injured the stroma underneath the epithelial layer. If concerned ask your vet for a referral to a equine ophthalmologist for a second opinion. He can put in a device to treat the eye with the frequency needed without further injury. DrO

Our vet came to check his eye yesterday and stated the ulcer is almost fully healed. We're back on bute for the next week. He mentioned a steroid ointment for the conjunctivitis (lower lid) to help with the inflammation once the ulcer is completely healed if still needed. My horse is now outside in the sun looking more comfortable, so I hope he's on his way to full healing. I am still seeing evidence of him rubbing his eye and hope the bute will relieve the need to rub.
