I have this curious question about the time my horse was in his new stall/barn and had an audible heart beat event. He was tied up in his stall with me grooming him. His neighbors had found something to look at but he wasn't able to look and see. I heard a big thumping sound; it was so LOUD. I put my hands on my horse and realized it was his heart, and was it ever vibrating as well as thumping. Within seconds the percussion diminished as did the sound. I was amazed. I know Thoroughbreds have large hearts but this kind of thumping percussion was pretty noticeable. Is this common with TBs?

I'm working with a TB now, that when he gets excited, I can hear his heartbeat. If I happen to be on his back when he gets excited, I can actually feel his heartbeat too. It is a very interesting feeling.

Hello ZB, I suspect your horse had a condition called Thumps which is a diaphramatic spasm in concert with the heart beat. It sounds like a mild case where you often just hear the sound, for more on this see HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Muscle & Tendon Diseases » Hypocalcemia, Thumps & Tetany. DrO

Interesting. I looked at the link and did not see any other events in common. Nicole's comment is similar: when my horse gets excited he gives me advanced notice by stiffening up. On one occasion his heart beat began to beat very strongly and slightly faster, becoming more quiet as the threat assessment was decided not any threat. I appreciate the advance warning.
