Posted on Wednesday, Jul 13, 2005 - 1:04 pm: Dr. O,They have found Purpura Hemorrhagica in 4 4-H horses in our area last thursday. They canceled the remaining clinics for this reason. 4-H members had a meeting last night at the fairgrounds that they had stopped clinics at. They said they disinfected the area, with what I don't know. Our Fair starts this Sunday and they said it's safe for the horses to come. They also said that the infected horses could still come to fair if the owners chose to bring them. How safe is this and would you have to use the same disinfecting procedure you would use for Strangles? I have read the article and know that bleach is not an effective disinfectant for strangles, instead to use Povidone Iodine or Quaternary Ammonium Salts. Does this apply to Purpura Hemorrhagica as well? I have had 4-H members around my other horses too. Can this be brought in on shoes, tires, ect.? I don't want to take any chances with this!!!!! I have seen a horse that had this before and it took a long time before he was O.K. Please Help with answers to these concerns. Thank you, Cheryl |

Posted on Thursday, Jul 14, 2005 - 8:01 am: Purpura is not an infectious disease Cheryl but a autoimmune reaction to exposure to Strangles or Strangles vaccination. 4 horses got purpura not because they were exposed to horses with purpura but because they were exposed to Strangles antigens. Prevent exposure to Strangles or Strangles vaccine and you prevent the number one cause of purpura in horses. For more on this see Equine Diseases » Respiratory System » Strangles & Streptococcus equi were we just last week rewrote the purpura section.DrO |

Particularly do we know of previous exposure to Strangles or vaccine history. If all these horses had been vaccinated prior to the show, it may have nothing to do with the fair grounds at all.DrO |

Posted on Wednesday, Aug 3, 2005 - 12:11 pm: DrO,I do not have a history on these horses but I'll see what I can find out. I don't believe it has anything to do with the fairgrounds, that's where they saw the symptoms on the horse or horses. Thanks, Cheryl |

Posted on Wednesday, Nov 5, 2008 - 10:29 am: Welcome Helen,We briefly discuss the treatment of purpura in the article on Strangles, since this is most often a Strangles associated complication. For more on this see Diseases of Horses » Respiratory System » Strangles & Streptococcus equi. There is information in both the clinical signs and treatment sections of that article. To get to the article start on the home page and select Diseases of Horses, then select Respiratory System, then select Strangles. If after reading the article you still have questions go to the bottom of that page and under the titles of all the other discussions you will see a "Start a New Discussion" button and you can begin your own discussion on your problem.
