Hi, I enjoy rehabilitating older standardbreds, attached are pictures of a 19 yo standardbred. There is no information on his background except he raced during his 3yo and 4yo years. He probably has been a buggy horse since then. The veins on the right side of his face near his eye and on his cheek are sticking out like the blood cannot drain. The vet is coming on Thursday. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Welcome Kim, Certainly the photos appear to show veins like those of a person with varicose veins caused by chronic increased venous pressure. In humans this can be a benign condition though sometimes accompanied by discomfort and swelling. At its most severe it might be associated with ulcers. Assuming this is also your vets diagnosis and there are no other signs of problems it may be no big deal. Ultimately the cause of the distension will determine the seriousness of the condition. If the problem is worsening or a problem develops with generalized swelling due to poor venous drainage managing the horse to prevent long periods of having his head down may help by keep down the pressure in the vessels.
