Dr. O - My horse has been diagnosed with Ehrlichia, as well as another horse on the property. He has responded to the treatment as you prescribed: Oxytetracycline/Doxycyline. He still has joint stiffness and discomfort, but is better than during the fever stage. Initially, we were told by someone at the barn that the disease is contracted from, 1) eating dirt and, 2) that the organism causing the disease stays dormant in the horse until stress causes it to reoccur, usually at the same time of the year when the animal was first infected. My vet is complete unaware of either etiology or distribution. Please advise. Oh - and should I expect that the "reluctance to move" should clear up in a couple weeks? Anything I can do to help ease the discomfort during the "cure time?" Thank you so much!

There is no way I know of that they contract the disease other than as described in the article and there is not a carrier state that has been reported. If he is still stiff, oral phenylbutazone should help, and yes I would expect him to become 100%.

Hi Dr. O - one follow up question concerning dosage. Your excellent article recommends Oxytet and Doxycycline 10 mg daily for up to 7 days. Today, my vet prescribed 45 doxycycline Hyclate Tabs, USP, 100 mg each, BID for 7-10 days, as a follow up to 5 days of Oxytet injections (interveinous) of 20 cc each. I didn't have your article with me so I didn't know to ask why the dosage he prescribed was so huge compared to 10 mg. The doxycycline regime for my horse seems to be like another horse in the barn is receiving for Lymes disease.

How do I reconcile what appears to be a BIG difference in the Doxycycline dosage, MG, wise?
Thanks again.

Hi Nancy,
I believe it's 10 mg per 1 kg of body weight. I'm feed my horse 45 100 mg pills 2 x a day. My pony got 35 per 2 x day. Kim

That is correct Kim, the article states 10 mg / kg which translates into milligrams per kilograms. MrsL, if your horse weighs 1000 lbs that would be 450 kgs which would be a total dose of 4500 mg. If your pills are 100 mg each that would be 45 tablets.
