I have a 3 mon. old quarter horse filly that is creep feeding. I got her and the mother about 2 weeks ago. I noticed she made a high pitch snoring sound when she was eating. At first I thought she was eating to fast and was not giving herself time to breath, but I have also noticed she does this when is grazing. She is current on her vaccines and is in good health otherwise. I have not noticed the sound after she has been running.

Hello Grayce's Mom,
It is uncertain what is happening but it sounds like a episodic upper air way interference of which there are several possibilities but, at least from the history you give, may not be serious and even something she could grow out of. For a list of possibilities see the article Equine Diseases » Respiratory System » Roaring: Noises in Exercising Horses. If it worsens you should have it looked at.

Dr O, I have two horses with different problems going on so I have not updated this problem with Sophie. I took her to an Equine Hospital near my home and she was diagnosed with GPT. I plan to take her as soon as I can get an appointment at Mississippi State Vet. School for surgery.

Though noise can be associated with guttural pouch tympany odd you did not see that her throatlatch was swelling. Usually guttural pouch tympany causes remarkable and easily observed swelling there. Is this the same horse described above?

Yes she is. She had an endoscope exam and x-ray done. The guttural pouch has an abnormal shape.
Her soft palette is floppy. She is not Impressive bred as I understand this is a problem with this line, but to be sure I had her tested and she was NN.I read your information on GPT and she has all of the symptoms .As for the swelling, she has a small amount on the right side. I have an appointment with a different Vet on Tuesday at Mississippi State School of Vet Medicine . Thanks for your help I really think this site is very informative.
