Hi DrO, I tried a search on "blue eyes" trying to answer my question but I was unsuccessful. Is a blue eye, regardless of the coloration/pigmentation around it, prone to any particular diseases? I.e. the eye itself, not the skin around it - ? Thanks, Cindy

I think the decrease in pigment in and around the eye make it more susceptible to actinic (sunburn) conjunctivitis and squamous cell carcinoma. DrO

Cynthia, I appreciate your question to Dr O and his response about this. I have a QH that has blue eyes.

Judith, does your horse have any problems with his eyes? Just curious. Thanks DrO. I'm considering buying a TWH colt that has blue eyes but no white around them. Not sure what to do.

I would not let this prevent me from buying a horse well suited to my needs if there is no history or sign of chronic irritation. DrO

I was told by my vet to use a fly mask while my blue eyed paint is out in the sun, as they are more sensitive to the ultraviolet rays. Kind of like sunglasses for horses. He has no problems with his blue eyes.

Cynthia, Sorry I was out of town this weekend and didn't have a chance to check the site for mail. My QH just turned two in March. She seems to have problems when dust is blowing around. I live in Missouri, and we didn't have rain for over 6 weeks between July 4th and August 17, so the dust and heat were terrible this year. I irrigate her eyes with Saline and that seems to help with the dust irritation. My vet has given me a couple of small tubes of Sulfa (Bactrum) antibiotic just in case the irritation causes a small infection and I can start treatment before he can get here to treat her. I haven't had to use it yet.
