need some advise concerning deafness in blue eyed paints. my wife and i have always ridden QH until we saw a great little paint. the problem is that he is deaf. I'm told that over 90% of all paints with two blue eyes are deaf. should we stay away from this horse just because he is deaf? i can see where a deaf horse might be a plus in the show ring but all we do is trail ride. it looks to me that a deaf horse on the trail might be a wreak waiting to happen. what are the pros and cons?? any web sites and or advise would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

That is drivel. We have a knock out black and white 2 yo with two blue eyes. He is fine. A friend breeds a lot of paints with 2 blue eyes and there has never been a deaf one in the bunch. EO

I agree with LKR I have never seen a horse with both eyes blue that I recognized as deaf. Because I cannot think of any critical way that loss of hearing might effect the way a horse goes on a trail but wonder if it might make him a bit spooky on things that suddenly appear in his field of vision, I would approach this horse as a individual and give him several trial trail rides. I thought it was blue eyed cats that were deaf ... although that may be an "urban legend", since I do not know about deafness in cats either. Nancy

Unfortuneately, to my knowlege, that is absolutely true. However, they seem to cope with their disability. EO
