Posted on Monday, October 31, 2005 - 9:40 pm: Hello, Dr. O. Your gastric ulcers article says to follow up the month-long treatment of one tube of Gastrogard with at least one month of a 1/4 tube; Valleyvet.com says this: For treatment, administer orally once daily for 4 weeks at the rate of one tube per 1250 lbs. of body weight. For prevention of recurrence, continue with ½ tube per 1250 lbs. for an additional 4 weeks. The gastrogard.com site indicates research done with one tube and with 1/2 tube for the second month. I certainly would like to go with the 1/4 tube. What do you think? Many thanks |

Research shows that 1 mg/kg is sufficient to prevent ulcers in the large majority of horses Ellie. For your 1000 lb (400 kg) horse that would be 400 mg daily. The tube contains 2280 mg of omeprazole so you get 4 doses out of it as a preventive. To view the research Ellie push the button at the bottom of the article labeled From the Nat. Library of Medicine:. It automatically searches the Library for research on ulcers in horses. DrO |
