Discussion on Pedal osteitis or laminitis

Are there any symptoms that will differentiate between pedal osteitis and laminitis?
I know that the two can occur at the same time but I am currently in a debate about a horse which I feel is laminitic but its owner considers it to have pedal osteitis only. This is impacting upon the issue of correct feeding for this horse.

Hello Siobhan,
Really the two should not be confused. One is a cause of unilateral lameness (PO), while the other causes bilateral lameness (laminitis). Foe descriptions of what this would look like see the articles on
1) Equine Diseases: Lameness: The Diagnosis of Lameness
2) Equine Diseases: Lameness: Foot and Sole Problems: Founder.
