Contagious Equine Metritis in HorsesIntroduction
In 1977, an outbreak of disease in mares on stud farms in England was reported. The mares would return to heat shortly after having been bred and gone out of heat normally. Some of these mares would have a copious purulent discharge within two days of breeding. These mares would not settle. Testing did not readily identify the causative organism that presumably originated with the stallions and the stallions remained healthy.
More intensive microbiological testing resulted in isolation of a facultative anaerobic (he does not like oxygen but it does not kill him) bacteria, which was proven to be the cause. In 1978 the disease was imported to the US by two french stallions. This article will deal with the diagnosis, treatment and control of CEM.
