Introduction
Diarrhea is a common problem in foals. The disease can range from watery stools with no other clinical signs to a life threatening cause of dehydration and toxemia. Colic frequently accompanies diarrhea when the cause is serious. Proper diagnosis and treatment is essential as there are several causes that require specific therapy for the foal to recover. Clinical Signs
Diarrhea is not hard to detect. Diarrhea in an otherwise healthy foal is generally not a life threatening problem as long as the foal can replace the lost fluids and electrolytes. More important are the other signs accompanying the diarrhea: fever, depression, colic, and dehydration. Note well: any foal with diarrhea who is also acting sick should be considered an emergency and the veterinarian called right now. Any of these complicating signs indicate a need for a rapid and thorough exam and prompt treatment.
