  Discussion on Parasite on Horse

My horse has a parasite on its coat that looks like a cream color lice. I'm sure it is not lice. But I could be wrong. Can you tell me what this could be and how to take care of this problem.

Hello Warren,
If it looks like a lice why do you think it is not a lice. And if it is not a lice what makes you think it is a parasite? The only way to identify your beasty is to have it examined by a parasitologist or entomologist. Put it in mineral oil and make a trip. We are getting so many requests on bugs I will have to get pictures of the common skin parasites of horses in here. Maybe I can get that this month. Most are so small however as to require a good hand lens or microscope with a very low power to identify.

Thanks Dr.O. I will have to have it looked at. Im new at owning horses. This is my first try at raising colts. My neighbor said to wipe them down with coal oil, light coat. Im so glad I joined this Advisor. Thank you again, Warren

Dr.O I have read all you have online here, but am still confused as to what kind of treatment for bots. Can you help me out ? Thank you.

Tony - I believe a regular worming with ivermectin will take care of internal bots. If you see their eggs on the horse, usually on the lower legs, sometimes higher up, scrape them off. There is a special curved bot knife for this very thing. I have seen some people use a regular serrated knife, but I would be petrified to have that sharp edge and point around my horse!

Hello Tony,
All of the deworming programs outlined in the article: Care for Horses: General Care: Deworming and Parasite Control: "Parasites and Dewormers (Anthelminics) in Horses" will control bots under any condition. Perhaps this is not emphasized enough in the article and I will try and make this clearer. Anthelcide (mentioned in another post by you) will not control bots.
