Firstly, this is about my Golden cocker Spaniel, she is my Lusitanos best friend, you have to see them in action to believe it. I apologise for putting this on the Horse site but I am desperately searching for anything that may help..I am hoping that with the wealth of knowledge and experience out there someone may have had a similar problem Suzi is 9 years old and has a terrible life until 3 years ago on a puppy farm, she lost an eye and was put through a rescue program. 8 months ago she had surgery for lipfold dermatitis, not successfull and now has mouth ulcers, running a temperature and the sides of her mouth are oozing with a yellow discharge. She has had 6 courses of different antibiotics, they now dont seem to be working at all. she has been blood tested and all organs are working, last few days not eating drinking little and sleeping. My vet seems at a loss as what to do with her next. I am really worried we are going to lose her very soon, has anyone had similar problems, I would really love to here from you

My first post was a little frantic, should have mentioned that I think this is a known problem with Cocker Spaniels, but as of yet no one can tell me a prognosis, it is almost like she cannot swallow her own saliva. anyway heres hoping. Thought you all might like to see her, shes so cute

Anita, I do not know about the lip fold dermatitis but have you gone to a veterinary dermatologist? I have a border collie who has had a skin infection on her back since the end of May and after 2 vets, a biopsy, a culture and 3 antibiotics, we were told last week to consult with a veterinary dermatologist. I hope you can get some answers soon to help your beautiful little girl.

Sweet little dog, Anita. I would suggest if your vet can't come up with answers, take Suzi to a teaching vet school. Your profile doesn't say where you live, but I have personally had wonderful experiences bringing animals to Tufts (in Mass) and to Michigan State.

Best wishes for Suzi's recovery.

Anita has your vet pursued a autoimmune etiology where the immune system is attacking the mucous membranes? I agree with Fran best is to get a referral to someone who can figure this out.

Dear Anita,

I have never encountered this problem before. I am so sorry you are going through this. I do not know where you are located but my vet has helped so many animals who were unable to be diagnosed by other vets. His name is Dr. Henry Pasternak. phone number 310-268-2275. Located on Sepulveda Blvd in West Los Angeles.

I am not saying he could cure Suzi. But it is worth a try.

To give you an example my 13 yr old dog had a loss of hair on his back. Several vets up in Northern California had seen him to no avail. Several hundreds of dollars later... I moved back home to Malibu. My Mom suggested I take Brandon to Dr. Henry.

It turns out that even though my dog did not have fleas. He still had an allergic reaction to possible flea dander.

So he prescribed advantage(2 doses at first). Then once a month there after. Chinese Magnolia powder which helps the skin maintain a silky, healthy coat. All of the hair from the middle of his back to half of the middle of his tail grew back very quickly. He never again had a problem. So why didn't the other vets catch this? It remains a mystery to this day.

I know this is nothing compared to what you are going through. Maybe Dr. Henry can help.

Good luck to you and Suzi!!!

Hi and a huge thank you to you all for responding to my plea. I have spoken with my vet this morning and suzi is now being referred to our local vet school. I should have said where we are based, its near to Edinburgh, Scotland so we have a large veterinary school there. Once again thank you, and I will keep you posted
