I have a 7 yr old Appy mare. Our vet has diagnosed SCC on the third eyelid of her left eye.
He first saw her late November. Her told us he would opperate on her when we got some warm weather and her would annesticize (sp?) her and do the opperation outside on the ground. The weather hasn't been warm enough yet...the area on her eyelid seems to be getting worse.. the area of the
tumor seems to be getting bigger, reder, but doesn't appear to be on her eye itself yet. Are we risking her eye to continue waiting? Is surgery out-of-doors an acceptable location for removal of the third eyelid? What kind of prognosis can we expect? Are there any further treatments that she 'll need? I have read all the other posted messages about SCC. Is there any other information we should know? My vet doesn't return calls much, so asking him hasn't been very much help. I would appreciacte any response. Thankyou

Are we risking her eye to continue waiting? Yes, the longer you wait the likely it is to spread.

Is surgery out-of-doors an acceptable location for removal of the third eyelid? Yes, this is a fairly simple surgery.

What kind of prognosis can we expect? Fair to Good if there is no signs of spreading to adjacent tissues and there is no cancer of the margins of the incision.

Are there any further treatments that she 'll need? That will depend on what is found at surgery.

Is there any other information we should know? None that I can think of.
