  Discussion on New Disease Alert?
Author Message

Posted on Monday, Feb 21, 2000 - 10:34 am:

Hi all,

Someone just told me about a 'new' disease, and called it "roto-virus', or "rona-virus" --they were unclear of the name and it's origin, and what it is exactly. I have seen nothing on a 'new' disease (my guess is something like the Nile Fever, or something) and I wondered if anyone would be so gracious as to shedding some light on this for me, and where to go for more info.

Thanks,

Kim Meade

Rotavirus is not a new disease but a very old one. It is a enteric viral pathogen: that is it is a virus that attacks the bowel and can result in diarrhea and fever. Rotavirus is not usually a serious infection unless the individual is immune compromised. See the articles on Diarrhea especially in Foals for some more information.

Unfortunatly for us that have had dealings with it, Rota is not a new diesease. We have been seeing it for years in Kentucky (especially farms around the Lexington Area), and it is also prelevent in Australia.

As Doc said, Rota is not going to kill the little guys, unless you let them get too far down. Mainly it is going to get very messy. Keep the foal away from others and make sure it gets plenty of fluids. Pepto Bismo or Imodium helps.
