I have been told by an old horseman that turpentine is the best cure for sand colic. A soft cloth saturated with turpentine held on the horses naval area for 15 to 30 minutes will cause the horse to pass the sand, or so says the old timer! Any truth or danger to this treatment?

Hello Dennis,
I doubt there is any research on this subject but let's consider two points:

1) What would be the mechanisim of action?
2) How was the theory tested? If it did or did not work how would we know?

I assume you have read the article on sand colic, diagnosis and treatment, it gives you some good ideas and may even explain why this guy thinks this.
