Last Saturday, a week ago, my 18 yr old mare was put into the indoor arena while I readied the trailer for a trail ride. When I returned, she was laying down and wouldn't get up. The barn manager finally was able to get her up and checked her heart rate. It was 56.
Her temperature was 105.8. Her gut sounds were somewhat supressed.
No nasal discharge and her gums were fine.
The vet gave her antibiotics and Vit B-12 shot. Her blood test showed her white blood cells were at 3800; he said they were suppose to be around 8000.
They next day her fever was gone and her WBC went to 4200 and two days later her WBC was 4500.
I am giving her 14 sulphur tablets 2x day and Caprine Fraction Immodulator every 3 days.
He believes she has a type of viral infection she is fighting.
His exact words were "her white blood cells are improving but still low; so she is dumping inflamatory cells someplace to fight infection"
What does this mean?
I thought white blood cell counts increased when fighting infection.
Is there anything else this could be besides a viral infection?

It is common to have a depression in WBC counts with a viral infection and the history is very suggestive that is the correct diagnosis. I usually find a little bute to bring the fever down and rest is all that is needed in such cases.
