I have an aquaintance that lost their mare due to the foal having such a large head it could not pass through. They couldnt afford the cesearian and I dont recall, maybe the vet tried to cut the foal up and out, but the mare had been pushing for so long, she was worn out and they lost her too. It was really sad, they lived over an hour from a vet andhad to bring her in a trailer, all the while she was in hard labour with a watermelon headed foal. that is the only time I have ever heard of a vet cutting up a foal, and obviously this foal would not have lived anyway. I hope you are using a different vet now.

We had this happen to a black angus cow only a yearling who got to the bull too early by accident. My parents even tried to pull the calf out by tying its legs to a rope the to the truck. It was so sad . they did everything to get this baby out. We lost both. I would have been histerical if they tried to cut up the live baby. I guess you have to be in the particular situation. If you need to save the mare or cow or whatever you do what needs to be done. How sad.
