Equine Herpes Virus 1/4 (EHV1/4) is a common and widespread cause of colds and fever in horses. Though most often responsible for upper respiratory track infections, EHV 1 is also an important cause of abortion and neurological disease. Proper diagnosis and differentiation from other respiratory diseases is important from a treatment and prognosis standpoint. Historically vaccination has conveyed poor immunity but this is improving. This article discusses how horses become infected, clinical signs, diagnosis, prognosis, and prevention of EHV 1/4 in horses.
