Had the spring "stuff" done this weekend. Pulled magnesium, cbc and chemistry panel to check for any signs of cancer...

Results

WBC 4.96 - states normal is 5.40 to 14.30
Plt: 62. - states normal as 90. - 350

What can I give him to get these back to normal?

I don't know what the rest means, but thought I should put it in, just in case:
Lym: 2.10 - normal: 1.50-7.70
Mono: 0.26 - normal 0.10-1.00
NEU: 2.49 - normal: 2.26-8.50
EOS: 0.11 = Normal: 0.10-1.00
BASO: 0.00 - normal: 0.00-0.03
%LYU: 42.4%
MONO: 5.3%
NEU: 50.2%
BASO 0.0%
HCT: 35.8% - Normal: 32.0-53.0
RBC: 7.03% - Normal: 6.80-12.90
HGB: 12.5 - Normal: 11.0-19.0
MCV: 50.9 - Normal: 37.0-58.0
RDW: 18.2% - Normal 17.0-21.0
MCHC: 34.9 - Normal 31.0-38.6
MCH: 17.77 - Normal 12.30-19.90
MPV: 13.89
PCT: 0.1%
PDW: 19.8%

If you want the cbc results, let me know.

Magnesium was 1.8 - states normal as 1.4 to 1.9, so he stays on the Quiessence.

He was diagnosed with suspected Apocrine Carcinoma, has had two lesions taken off, no other recurrences in 4 years...however, the lab report did say it could metastacize inside, therefore my concern lies with the low counts.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

He looks like "the picture of health" per the vet...however, I think that his coat is a little dull for him, but then again it could be just dirt :-)

Could this be that his immune system needs help? What is the best immune booster I can give him?

Thanks in advance...trying to stay positive here, vet is out today so I can't ask him.

Vet called...he said not to be too alarmed because we really don't know anything yet. He gave me the worst case scenario - said he didn't think this would happen...but I'm not even going to type it because it's NOT going to happen.

He suggested a Platinum Performance vitamin that has an immune booster in it...I'm going to show the vet what I'm feeding now and see how it relates.

He's coming back in two weeks instead of a month. I don't think I could handle waiting 30 days, especially since we'll probably need a third test to see what's normal for my horse.

Does this sound good to you Dr.O?

btw, he did say I could cut the Quiessence in half and we'll test again in 6 months....he thinks we can wean him off it.

I don't see any concern with these numbers Aileen. Just because the WBC and platelets are a little low is really no cause for concern in an otherwise healthy horse and does not indicate a need to "boost" the immune system, whatever that means. Does your horse suffer from chronic infections that indicate his immune system is not working?

Thank you Dr. O! What I didn't realize is what low really meant...and not hearing from the vet to determine what it meant...of course I worried. He does not suffer from chronic infections, however, runny nose, yes...mushy bms, yes... allergic reactions, yes...but nothing that would indicate he has a chronic infection with my inexperience. He's still a happy, playful sweetheart.

After the vet left on Saturday, I went to the feed store and came home to find Brave passed out in the sun. I couldn't wake him -- banged on the barn...he wouldn't open his eyes -- then he was either dreaming or convulsing and I yelled at him. This was not normal at all...but then he did roll, shake and came to me...all normal. So I attributed it to being tranquillized and the warm sun. It's been raining non stop here and it was the first day of warm sunshine.

Then I got the message about the counts...and well I panicked.

Dr.O, thank you so much for easing my mind.

Thank you too Fran...it will be positive :-)

Here is the guaranteed analysis of Platinum Performance Equine... if I did switch him, could I effectively stop giving him Farrier's Formula and Cosequin? It would then be cost effective for me.

Next blood chemistry test came back:

WBC 5.7
Blood Platlet 130. - doubled from two weeks ago

Vet said the wbc is not ideal...but IS in the normal range, so he's good to go. Phew!
