Hello Dr. O, yesterday I noticed a deep laceration about 3-4 inches long on the heel of our mare. I am pretty diligent about picking out the feet when they come in at night, and cannot understand how I have missed this. About 10 days ago, I noticed a small amount blood on her back foot on the same side, but could not find anything (apparently I didn't look as well as I should have). Anyway, we had a wonderful ride yesterday, no lameness at all. While un-tacking and picking out the feet I then noticed this old cut. It is still healing, and does not seem to be infected. I soaked it in salts with betadine, used betadine scrub, then covered it with betadine and let it dry. It is in a bad spot and although it is several days old, I am giving her a tetanus today. She gets her annual tetanus in her vaccines, but has not received it yet. It looks like a clean cut, almost like a knife cut. Am I doing everything that I should be doing?? Also, about the same time that she must have gotten cut, she didn't eat one night and her temp. was 103.5 with no other symptoms. I called the vet and he told me to give her banamine to reduce the fever. This is spring and it is very hard to get a vet out here unless it is a dire emergency. Her fever was gone in two days, and I cancelled the vet call. |

I would not soak this wound Deborah because that contaminates with the gunk on the bottom of the foot, instead I would use a hose. For detailed instructions on tending this wound see, Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Wounds / Burns » Long Term Deep Wound Care. DrO |

Cannot help but wonder what kind of tetanus you are giving so far past the time of the injury. I heard a Vet. speak back in November who said to keep up the regular tetanus vaccines but not to give a tetanus toxoid injection for a specific injury because of the potential for liver damage. |

Vicki, you are confusing the vaccine (tetanus toxoid) with the antitoxin. It is the antitoxin that is a risk for chronic hepatitis. For guidelines on this see Equine Diseases » Nervous System » Incoordination, Weakness, Spasticity, Tremors » Tetanus. DrO |

Thank you Dr. O for your advise. Hosing does make more sense. I have read the article. Thanks for being here, I sometimes feel a little silly contacting our vets here about something so small when I know how over worked they are at this time of the year. Have a great day |
