Dr O as mentioned in my thread Anerior Enteristis and Oleander my horse has been operated on for Anterior Enteritis. I am very concerned about the possibility of founder and having read your article on aggressive prophylactic treatment you mention soft footing. I live is Sedona where the ground is particularly hard. The horses are all in large corrals with run-in shelters. What do you recommend I put down for footing. Upon coming home he will be sharing a corral with his half-brother gelding. They have been together 5 years. I am deeply concerned as this is a young horse (5 years old). He is not shod, I will be sure the farrier does the correct trimming and administer the bute and ace you recommend. How long do I need to do this preventive work for?

Sand might be best until he is completely recovered from the surgery.

The second half of my original question is still uncertain. How long do I need to take preventive action for founder re bute and ace administration?

Unless your vet prescribes it I would not use bute and ace as a prophylaxis. Aggressive prophylaxis as described in the article would best be defined in the article Equine Diseases » Lameness » Diseases of the Hoof » Founder & Laminitis » Founder & Laminitis an Overview under the heading of "Soaking the Feet". The time for this may have already passed.

It is uncertain how long you will need to be vigilant Ilona because we don't know how long it will take your horse to recover or if there may be further complications. You should be careful until he is completely recovered from surgery. Besides soft footing, regular trimming of small amounts of foot, and minimizing grain intake would be useful.

Thanx Dr O. Espiritude is still at the equine hospital, they do not expect him to be ready to come home for another 4-5 days. Upon his return I will follow very precisely all directives. Yes the time for soaking feet is passed. Espiritudes' feet have been checked for a pulse at least 6 times per day according to the vet and none has been detected. They have put on foam hoof covers, for what good it may do, but it does soften things up a bit. So far it looks promising that laminitis has been avoided but it is still early days.
