I have a minature mare that came to the barn this morning with a swollen muzzle. When she tried to eat her grain she had to bite down with her teeth as her lips were stiff. I could see any cuts or abrasions. Any ideas on what could be going on with her? Are there any poisonous plants that cause the lips to swell? I live in Eastern TN. I've only had this little mare since December when she was given to me, and do not know a lot about minis. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Cheryl |

Here is a picture. There was a terrible storm last night and she is pretty muddy. |

Here is another picture. Because of size constraints I could only upload one per post. |

The list of possibilities would be the same as with a horse and there are many possibilities. Without any vital signs we cannot judge if this may or may not be serious and if there is fever, depression, or difficult breathing you should call your vet. Otherwise the first thing you need to do is decide the nature of this swelling and for how to do that see, Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Swellings / Localized Infection / Abscesses » Diagnosing and Assessing Swellings in Horses. Thank you for your replies. She seems to be back to normal this morning and most of the swelling is gone. Maybe she did get stung by a bee. I did feel a little bump on further examination, but she was able to eat her grain as usual and seems fine now. Thanks again. |
