I'm searching for information on Lymphoma cancer forms and the methods of treatment. My 12 yr old Morgan/Quarter horse gelding has just been diagnosed with Lymphoma cancer. After having a cyst removed from his thigh (more towards his anus)...the biopsy report showed "Cutaneous Plasmacytoma". My vet requested additional testing on the tumor to try to find it's origin in the body. The pathology report then showed the diagnosis incorrect, and he has "lymphoma". I was advised that this cancer can take (2) forms:
1)cutaneous (skin)
2)internal, which would attack the internal organs and lymphnodes.
Since he is not showing any signs of illness, and he has a fantastic appetite, we are going to assume the 1st. (I was told there is NO way to test if the cancer has gone internally)
My vet recommends an aggressive steroid treatment of 10 tablets/day of dexamethasone for the 1st 2 wks and then slowly reduce the dosage over a period of six weeks.
Can you offer any additional information on this disease? Is this an appropriate way to treat it? and is there anyway to tell if the cancer is spreading? I don't want him to suffer. thankyou!

Hello Victoria,
I had articles on both lymphoma and myeloma in the production stage, I have finished up the lymphoma article and put it at:
The Horseman's Advisor: Equine Diseases: Cardiovascular, Blood, and Immune System: Lymphoma and Lymphosarcoma. I think it will answer most your questions.
