Posted on Thursday, Jun 8, 2000 - 8:40 am: I have a 15 year old mare with quite a large cyst lodged at the biforcation of the uterine horns. How can one rid the mare of this cyst ? Her ovaries are functioning properly and pregnency is detected at 11 days with the ultrasound. She absorbs it after that. Regumate therapy was used with no succces. The doctor said that cyst prevents the conceptus fom attatching to the wall. Unfortunately, where I am (Egypt) we do not have the luxury of a laser machine which I understand would correct this problem in a matter of minutes. Any other remedies that you can suggest? |

Posted on Friday, Jun 9, 2000 - 5:26 pm: The cyst is about 2- 3 cm in diaameter. She last falled in 1993 . Follwoing which she suffered twice from early embryonic loss. She was lavaged and antibiotics were infused . Yeast infection followed follwed by adhesions. The yeast infection was cleared and the adhesions were removed some 3 years later. We were lucky to have a visiting vet from the US with a portable laser machine. She looked perfect. A year later the cyst which was treated with the adhesions reappeared and the mare suffered another yeats infection. She was cleared of the infection but we realized that following every heat she showed retained murky fluid in the uterus. We assumed that she was not clearing her uterous properly so now at the onset of heat we give her 20 units of oxytocin twice per day. The tone was great following this routine( which we did for three consecutive cycles) and no bacteria was cultured. We bred her on the following heat , and followed that 6 hours later with oxytocin . the second morning we gave another oxyctocin shot and bred her the next day and followed the same routine. The second was the last breeding since she ovulated shortly after ( 6 hours) . She was lavaged with 3 litres of saline and given oxytocin . Two hours later she was infused with amikacin and twice again on each following day.$ days after ovulation we started her on regumate 10 ml per day and 11 days later a conceptus was detected. At thirty days the pregnacy was not detected she reabsorbed. |

Posted on Saturday, Jun 10, 2000 - 1:03 pm: I suspect that the problem is not mainly the single 20 to 30 mm cyst but a chronically inflammed and possibly scarred uterus. I have had mares with cysts that big (and bigger) settle pretty easily. Perhaps a endometrial biopsy wouled give you a better idea of the chance of settling this mare and other treatment options.
