Hi Guys

Its been a while.
I'm hoping maybe someone can give me some advice. My mare had a fine filly foal two months ago. The foal is doing great but there is what looks like a red piece of flesh in the corner of one of her eyes. Has anyone ever seen this before or have an idea what it could be?

It sounds like you are looking at he third eyelid Sean, but without seeing a picture I am only guessing. Is it the corner closest to the center line of the head?

A prominent third eye lid is primarily cosmetic and it is not uncommon, though usually both eyes are the same. It will not effect eye sight unless it is covering the iris. Some might argue that it will be prone to sunburn and squamous cell carcinoma but this is not a big risk. Whether to remove this mass or not should be a decision made by a veterinarian who can examine the foal.

Sean,

Did the foal always look like this, or did you suddenly notice it.

Last year we had a mare that rubbed her eye and irritated the third eyelid making a big red protruding mass at the corner. It cleared up after using an antibiotic in her eye for several weeks.

Hi, now you mention it, I don't think it was always there, the foal is two months old and i've only really noticed this the last 3 weeks or so, Did your vet recommend the antibiotic?

Well, its a long story but the short of it is that it was a client's mare and he didn't pay his vet bill. So he had no veterinary service. So we got eye ointment (without steroids) from the vet and tried to put it in her eye a minimum of 3 times a day. It was slow to heal, but finally did.

Since you do have veterinary care, perhaps your vet can stain the eye to make sure there isn't a scratch and you will be able to use an eye ointment with a steroid. It will probably heal up much faster.

Excellent point Linda, I presumed the foal was born this way. Pain can cause the 3rd eyelid to prolapse up: is the foal squinting this eye Sean/ If so the vet should be out quickly to examine this.
