Discussion on Wringing tail & wants to buck | |

Posted on Wednesday, Jul 5, 2000 - 3:50 am: DrO,I have a friend whose horse has just started to wring his tail and tries to buck when she gets into the saddle and asks him to walk. This horse is 11 yrs. He was a cold back horse when he was 3 The trainer said he was cold back when you first started to ride, but, this was when he was 3. This horse is just used for trail riding and does nothing more than walk. He has been checked by an equine massage therapist and found nothing. Saddle fit is fine. Could his hocks be the cause of this? We are just trying to ask any questions so when we take him in to see the vet this week we might have narrowed down things to look for. This horse reacted badly to a rake behind his foot last week after he was talked to so he would not be startled. This is very unatural behavior for him. My friend was bucked off of him 3 weeks ago and was hurt. She is healing but is very concerned about her horse and his unnatural behavior. Could you give us any information. Thank you, Judy |

Posted on Wednesday, Jul 5, 2000 - 9:42 am: Judy, I would suggest you have this horse scoped for ulcers, as my mare acted the same way and this is what we discovered the problem was. It has taken me over a year of checking into every possibility we could think of. I really like my mare and didn't want to give up on her. She would pin her ears and buck for no apparent reason. Also, she just recently lost her pasture mate and the behavior returned, so I had her checked again and the ulcers had come back. I treated her with gastrogard back in Feb. when we first discovered the ulcers, and have her back on it again now. Hope this is of some help. DeAnn |

Posted on Monday, Jul 17, 2000 - 3:10 pm: Up date on friends horse. Vet checked out fine. He is now going to a trainer with his owner. Trainer found him to be a nervous horse holds everything inside. He had an additude. Everything seems to be going just fine. Thank goodness for trainers to help us work out our fears after having had a bad spill.Judy |
