Hi,
Right now i have a horse that is at a hospital to recover after having anterior enteritis. We think he will be okay but i would like to know if there is anyway to prevent this in the future. Is there any plant that could cause it. Also will probiotic help prevent it or will it promote it.
thanks,
Kathy

Hello Kathy,
There seems to have been a real lull in the research of this problem and what is in the article is about what we know at his time. In general good husbandry is the best prevention we have, though no husbandry factors have been implicated in the disease.

Almost one year later my six-year-old quarter horse gelding has fully recovered from surgery to diagnose anterior enteritis. In the process of treatment he also came down with a bad case of stomach ulcers. I have kept him on a pro-biotic for the past year and an ulcer preventative(which probably at this time is not necessary). In retrospect I think it was brought on in large part due to stress--bad pasture mate and change in barn.
