DrO,
My TWH bruised the inside right hind heel bulb badly enough to cause a rather large abscess. He was three legged for five days befor the abscess broke out at the coronet band. I soaked his foot in epson salts twice a day until it broke, then added Benidine to the soak water and soaked him once a day for four more days. All of the swelling is gone along with the digital pulse.

My question is, after reading your information on abscesses and bruising, will an opening at the coronet band drain well enough to clear the infection? My farrier has been checking the foot right along and said there was not a place at the heel to pare away, and that I sould be home free.
Any thoughts?
Thank you DrO once again for making owning a horse so much easier!
Paula

Hello Paula, your case does not sound like a solar abscess but more like injury to the bulb of the heels: I assume the coronet opened where the bulb was bruised? This would not have the drainage issues of a solar abscess.

Thank you DrO
Yes the coronet opened just above the heel. The hole is quite impressive! Thank you again for your quick reply.
