I gave my 8 yr. old gelding his annual rabies vaccination. Later that day his legs swelled up and he had a 103.6 temp. He was also somewhat lethargic but he was eating. For two days he was treated with banamine, antihistamine and penicillin. By day 3 his legs are back to normal his temp is about 100.5 and he still seems a little depressed. It also seems like his sheath is a bit swollen on the very bottom? He seems to be getting better but I'm still concerned, this has never happened to him before. Any suggestions or advice?

Cindy,
My mare had the same reaction in her hind legs after her spring vaccinations. Normally if she reacts at all, it is with swelling in the neck. I called the vet to make sure it was normal and he said yes it happens. I cold hosed for two days and she was fine. Even though I was guessing that it was just a reaction, it kind of scared me because we are dealing with a very swollen tendon sheath in one of her hind legs and more swelling didn't seem like a good thing. Everything is fine now.

These type reactions are usually caused by circulating immune complexes, vaccine and preformed antibody to the vaccine, lodging in the small vessels of the leg and inducing an immune reaction. The article on Care for Horses » Vaccines & Coggin's Test » Vaccines and Adverse Reactions gives specific advice on prevention and treatment.
