Dr. O,
I have a potentially dumb question....what is the difference, and any potential advantage of using Banamine paste rather than Bute for a horse with strangles and giving 10 days of a tetracycline rather than a penicillin as the antibiotic? Whenever I read about strangles treatment for early cases it always says Bute and penicillin....we currently have several Strangles cases at our barn and this is what our vet prescribed.

Thanks much!!
Christine

Substituting Banamine for bute is no big deal though a good deal more expensive. But the doxycycline has be baffled, in the few reports I can find of testing with tetracycline family drugs Strep. equi equi is often resistant. Perhaps he has done sensitivity testing showing different?

Thanks Dr. O! I will check regarding the drug sensitivity testing that may have been done with the culture. The vet did not mention it and with several horses still coming down with fevers, an antibiogram would indeed be very helpful.

And unnecessary when usual treatment regimens are used. I am interested in how the horses so on the doxy. First how sure are you it is Strangles and does the fever respond in 24 - 48 hours of going on the doxy?

Well, we know its strangles since cultures were taken....now that you mention it, though, the curious thing was the the first horse that came down with fever, snots and looked like death warmed over had the culture taken and was right away put on doxy - the owner recalls that he said "they did tests and this AB would work well against this type of strangles"...
Anyway, the horse and the others that went on Doxy responded well to the ABs. Wonder whether the is some Pc resistant strangles making the rounds...can this happen?

How was the decision made to begin treatment on a horse Christine? What specific set of circumstances were used.

Streptococcus seems uniquely designed for treatment with penicillin family drugs and typically labs don't run sensitivity on streps when they find them unless asked to specifically do it: they know the pen class of drugs are likely to be available and effective. It appears that your vet had sensitivities run, doxy worked, and he decided to give it a go.
