I don't know if this is the most appropriate forum for this question, but since the main concern is for EIA, here is where I type. A friend is very concerned about a horse that will soon be her neighbor. She is moving into a new place, and found that a neighboring horse, a stallion, has apparently never seen a vet (according to the owner). The guy tells her not to worry, the horse has never left the property, he can't possibly have anything such as EIA or anything else. I think she is rightly worried. In reading the articles on the Coggins and such, I see that NC has no regulations like having to be tested yearly. Are there any such guidelines for requirments as far as vaccinations, etc, that would allow my friend to require this horse see a vet? I know this may sound petty, but I agree with her in her worries.

I know of no such laws. How close is this horse to her horse?

The fence lines are not the same, but they are separated by probably no more than 100'.

Not far enough I am afraid. First should be the realization that in our area, Jordana, we have not had active EIA in recent history that I am aware of. All the cases that I have ever found have been imported from VA. But it is not a guarantee. I recommend she express her concerns to her neighbor and offer to pay for the test. If seems unfair but if she is going to lose sleep over this, it is cheaper and healthier than drugs.

Thanks Dr O. Yeah, I know we haven't had EIA here for a while. That is a great idea for her to offer to pay for the test - it surely won't break the bank! *sigh* I just wish more people who have horses, particularly stallions, would be responsible owners. I guess we just do what we can, right?!

Hello Claudette,
It stands for Virginia, USA. Sorry for the confusion.
