I have a 16 yr gelding with diarrhea the last couple of days, eats and drinks ok, seems a little down and out though. Now I have a 6 mos filly that resides in the next stall with diarrhea and she now seems a little down and out. The gelding started eating more slowly with loud slushing sounds coming from his belly and now I have the same symptoms with the filly, eating more slowly and loud slushy sounds in her belly. Is there an illness that is contagious? They were both vaccinated around 4 weeks ago.

Thanks for your reply.

Karen

Karen,
Have you read the article and forums associated with this topic? They are very informative and should answer many of your questions. Have you taken their temperature? Please, don't hesitate to have your vet out as you will read in the article "diarrhea can range from no worry to life threatening". Your gelding and filly sound like they are depressed and may need medical intervention.

I have three mini mares that all have diarrhea, one has had it for about two weeks, I treated her with trisulpha and kaopetic and she seemed to get better but then it came back, next another mare came down this past week hers is terrible just runs everywhere, and now another, they are the only ones so far out of 16. I don't know what to do, nothing seems to be working, I will call the vet tomorrow, they all drink and eat ok, I did notice yesterday one of the mares laying down, I gave her banamine and kao and pencillin, but today it is worse, they are all three pregnant, and close to foaling could this just be them getting ready to foal? all help would be appreciated.
Thanks Joy Guin

Hello Nancy,
Pregnancy is not a cause of diarrhea and there are many causes of diarrhea some are infectious. For a listing of common causes of diarrhea and their diagnosis and treatment see the article, » Equine Diseases » Colic and GI Diseases » Diarrhea in Horses » Diarrhea an Overview.
