I have a 9 year old arab.gelding who was diagnosed this past week with having a hypoactive thyroid. I was wondering if his other problems were related to his thyroid. 1. dull coat 2. hard to put weight on-very thin 3. poor muscle tone 4. tied up in fall 5. very moody 6. flaky skin 7. poor wound healing 8.on and off lameness in all four limbs He is not wormy and his teeth are fine. His feed schedule: 1/3 scoop compl advantage with 1/4-1/2 scoop veg oil and two flakes of hay -He is fed TID. The oil is only fed am/pm. He also gets strongid-c daily wormer, vit e/sel and now his thyroid med. The hay is of good quality. My horse is not a nervous horse, nor has bad stall habits. He is groomed daily and worked 5 days a week. He definately has been my "mystery" horse the entire 2 years that I have had him. He has always had a dull coat no matter what I have done. I appreciate any response. THANKS!!!!! |

Hello, Your description is very good for what is found in experimentally induced hypothyroidism. One exception is lameness was not a feature in the studies I have seen. The condition is so rare in adult horses that this is the only way we have been able to study this phenomena. Have you run laboratory values for T3 and T4? What were those numbers. Have you considered running a TSH test? There is more on this at, Disease: Endocrine: Hypothyroidism. DrO |
