My horse poked himself in the eye about 3 weeks ago. Has been seen by the vet. The vet proscribed antibiotic ointment and an ointment to dilate the eye 10 days ago. When I finished with the med's his eye began to tear slightly. The tearing has increased over the past two days and now his eye is swollen.

Sounds like it's time for the vet to have another look at the eye.

I second Barbara's opinion.

I was able to squeez enough antibiotic ointment out of the two tubes I had to treat the eye last night and this morning. I called the vet but it's his day off. I picked up more ointment at lunch from his office. T's eye looks better already. I called another vet. She pretty much said what Dr. O said above but added that eye injuries are slow heeling. The swelling and tearing I described was not unusual based on what my vet had told me about the injury. Until he could come out to see the eye it was advisable to continue treating it with the antibiotic ointment.

Are you keeping him in a dark area?
I have seen a couple of eye pokes and they both had eyedrops that dilate the eye.
both had to be kept in a near dark stall for around 1-2 weeks, has your vet mentioned this?

I hope it heals well with full vision.

I am having a horrible experience with my 21 year old apps eyes. It started years ago when she became sensitive to the sun. A face mask helped that. Then I believe she developed allergies and began itching her eyes and literally scratching/cutting them all the time. She has been living on antibiotics, drops, antihistamines, bute etc. When it looked like her eyes were fianlly clearing up she cut her one eye so bad that her sight will be gone. We are trying everything to make her comfortable and try to get them to heal and not itch. Accept for putting a helmet on her head we don't know what else to do. My vet set she has cronic eye problems and all we can do is continue what we have been doing. Our main mission with her real bad eye is to keep it from becoming infected.

Has anyone had a similar problem and have a miracle drug or idea that we may not have tried?

Try finding a Veterinary Opthimoligist, that is your best hope. Perhaps you can contact the State Vet Teaching Hospital...

Hello Elaine,
Without examining the eye and with just the general information you provide all we can give you is some general thoughts. Emily's is a good one. There can be several causes for chronic irritaion and if you can identify the specific problem you can make some real progress. My thoughts on chronic eye inflammation and treating eye infections are pretty much summed up in the articles in this section.
