My mare has occasional mild gas colics, and for the first one (a few years ago) I called the vet, did banamine, tubing, etc. I've also kept up with the advice here, and find that the diagnostic protocol is very useful.

For my mare, lunging seems to work well. Just this week she presented with mild symptoms. It was after 9 p.m. and a vet call would have been not only a nuisance for me AND my vet, but expensive.

However, her symptoms were mild, and I followed the steps -- twice. She continued to show some improvement every time I checked her (every 2 hours overnight) and by morning she was fine.

So, Dr. O., my vet didn't have to trek out to the boonies in the middle of the night, and I didn't have to pay a $200 bill.

Thanks!
Jerre

Jerre,
I to have used lunging for about 10 minutes and so far it has been the key. But then I think I catch it early. I know when my horses are off. Some times they get lunged if they need it or not.
I dont think a little lunging would hurt any horse, expecially mine.LOL Glad you did not need a vet.
Happy Trails,
Wanda

I have a new arrival to the farm that after two days has started showing symptoms of mild colic. I haven't had to deal with colic much before so I am very grateful for the excellent information in the article. I haven't received a return call from the vet yet.....????? After Banamine and walking he looks normal but so nice to know how to watch him and when to start feeding, etc. Thank you!
