I was out of fly spray this past Sunday and used the roll-on fly spray on my horse on his body. The barn just called to tell me that he has welts on his body. They washed him with a mild shampoo, but it looks like his skin is burned. I have a call into the vet, but have not heard back. I told them to put him in his stall for now (to get out of the sun). I can buy Benadryl to add to his feed - or should I just use bute (not sure if he is in pain). I will go out there at noon today (with the intention of buying Benadryl) and check him out. Is this ok?

The most important step was the washing and you may think of repeating. Cool water alone on the body will feel good. I would consider applying a 100% aloe lotion to the burned areas. Benadryl will help if this is an allergic reaction and it may well be. Also a dose of flunixin (Banamine) will help.

Dr O,

My mare was covered with welts this morning. I believe something is getting to her during the night. How much Benadryl would a 900# mare require. Thank you. Leilani

He no longer had welts - but it looked like he had huge scrapes - the skin was gone. It looked like someone had poured syrup on his back - it was hard and crusty. I washed the area and found what could be bug bites - round patches of hair loss - about the size of a quarter. I did not put that stuff on like that - it was put on in streaks only. A friend said their horse had fly reactions that wept like that. It is assumed he had the scrapes, then flies attacked. The vet had called back and said to give Tri-Hist (I had some leftover from my other horse). My other horse had the same stuff put on - and he was fine - no reaction. Today, I put some swat on as there were MANY flies biting at his wounds in the stall. I am ordering a fly sheet, but may be able to borrow one until it gets here. He seems fine in every other way - eating, wanting to get out of the stall, etc. I bought the benadryl, but didn't give any as I wasn't sure how much. I will check the above article for the amounts. Thanks.
