I wrote under my original problem, choke but it's turned worse. It wasn't choke, she's at Washington State University and they are suspecting Guttural Pouch Mycosis. I read some on it from the internet. It's been a horrible 5 days and she's losing weight by the minute.
Dr. O, have you any experience with this? No definite diagnosis yet, I'm waiting for the call. She's not been able to swallow and is runny in the nose. We've treated her for choke (took her to a very good equine clinic), the Dr. did a scope after he put a hose down her throat. I left her there and he called today with the news of the transport. I'm beyond worried sick as all of us would be in this situation. I'm trying to stay calm but it's unbearable. she is the sweetest most kind soul, I love her.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your precious horse. I know only too well how painful the waiting is and how deep a love for a horse can go. Keep the faith.......they can do wonderful things for horses these days and the best you can do is doing the best you can for her.

I am heartbroken to say after talking with the doctor at WSU I've decided to euthanize her. Her prognosis was poor because she also had severe nerve damage to her epiglotus or something. A surgery could have been done but even then she said the prognosis was poor because she wasn't sure of the extent of the nerve damage. So I didn't want her to go through all of this to come out with a poor quality of life. I've been sitting in my car (I'm at work) contemplating and crying but I think I've made the right choice. Thanks for listening.

Patricia,
Oh my. I have tears for you. You did make the right choice because you loved her enough so that she would not suffer. That is true love.

Patricia, what a very sad day for you. I guarantee that there are many hearts weeping with yours today. It was time. I am sure that you have done the right thing for your mare and for yourself. It is so very hard to make decisions to end a pet's or horse's life. Many of us have had to do the same thing, and we feel your sadness.

Patricia, you definitely made the right choice. We had an 8 month old Gumboy filly out of Groovy's Shadow choke. We took her to Pilchuck at Snohomish. They cleared it, kept her for a week and sent her home. 3 days later, she choked again, we took her back and they worked on her for a week, she got shavings in her throat because she was hungry while at Pilchuck, choked again and so we put her down. During all of this, they were not completely honest with us that the prognosis was practically zilch. They had never seen a choke in one that young, and obviously there was permanent damage so that was the reason for the second choke, then the choke from the shavings was the final straw. We left her with a friend after the 3rd choke and she was feeding her a gruel when she choked once more. That was when we put her down. Through all this, her mother was a trooper, After $4000.00 in vet bills we are a lot wiser. We will not go through something like this again. It is too emotionally draining. EO

I am so very sorry to hear the news, Patricia. You gave your horse the best care and in the end made the wise and unselfish decision to end her pain. Find some comfort in knowing that you made compassionate choices for your mare.

On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots..

What a terrible decision you've had to make - as you say, it all seems to have come about so quickly.

I am so very sorry.

Dr. O, is this a common thing? I have 6 other horses is there a higher chance the others will get it since Boomer had it?

No this is uncommon and not considered contagious. Often the organism isolated is a common barn organism like Aspergillus and we really don't understand why the disease develops in some horses.

I'm sorry too about your horse Kristin B. I think I read something on it, didn't he have cancer? So it was a surprise for you as well! I'm still in shock.

Yes it was cancer, his kidney's ended up shutting down, the vet was out one day and we had to put him down the next, the vet was even in shock how fast he went down hill, I have decided I am glad that he didn't have to suffer for long, although I do miss him dearly I know he is better off, but it still hurts... he was a good boy he was actually our first horse and I am SO grateful that he was. He taught us all SO much he taught us all everything we know. He ended up being my youngest daughters horse, which made it REALLY hard for her but she also knows he is in a better place for him and I just got another horse so now she is focused on him. Thats the worst thing about having pets..................losing them.

Patricia, so sorry about your horse. As Kristen said - the worst thing about having pets is losing them, and, over a lifetime we go through this often. It never gets easier.
My condolences,
Lilo

The pain exists BECAUSE of infinite moments and hours of joy and perfection. I doubt there is one among us who would choose to avoid the pain, by avoiding ownership. For the pain of the loss is soon overwhelmed by the memories of the exquisite experience.
