I have a 16 month old yearling colt with a small umbilical hernia. The hernia ring is about 1 1/2 cm diameter and has been present (that I know about) since he was about 5-6 months old. At times I have thought it was getting smaller but basically the size has not changed. I have talked to two local vets about this and searched the internet extensively. One vet says geld him and fix it, that it is genetically passed on to offspring. One vet says that it isn't and I can geld him or just have the hernia fixed. Info on the internet seems divided on the genetic disposition of the hernia. Also I have read that possibly the hernia may still close on its own. I have found little on this site about umbilical hernias. Does anyone have any experience with with this? Or advice? We had hoped to keep him a stallion and train for roping and a trainer has advised us not to have him gelded yet as he really has a lot of good qualities.
