I haven't seen this before. Our Friesian mare has about 3 or 4 hard bumps. Imagine a bebe about the size of a pea, under the skin. Very hard, like a bebe. In weird places. One is on the foreleg, on the cannon bone front. One is on the neck. Another is on the inside of the leg. There may be more. They are not hives. There is no evidence that the skin has been broken or irritated. It's like I surgically placed a bebe under the skin. If there weren't more than one, I might think she hit her leg and this is what was left. The first one I found on the neck, I thought might be a splinter under the skin.

Any ideas?

Hello Laurie,
From you description I am afraid a diagnosis is not possible as there are several problems that present this way. The article associated with this discussion lists most of them, some of their differentiating characteristics and how to get a diagnosis when appearance is not enough.

Can you move them? Or are they solidly attached?

Good question. I don't know. I'm going to have to go out to feel them. However, I believe that I can move them, at least the one on the neck.

My horse showed up with some bumps like this a few days ago and they're still there. A marble on his belly and a cluster of flatter ones on the top of his back leg in the rear.

Our local vet said they were bug bites, which is odd to me because they feel so hard and didn't go down like usual. I'll see if I can get a picture tonight.

How long have yours been there?

Laurie, I tried taking some clear pics of the ones that showed up on my horse the other day. I noticed some more on the front of his leg today in a cluster. Do they look the same as what yours has? Dr. O -- they are REALLY hard, and the cluster ones are bumpy and cover a larger area than the marble sized ones (more joined together than the picture shows). What do you think?

this is the marble sized one on his belly

these are the new ones, not veins they're hard

These look a little bigger than mine. The one on the neck, since it is isolated, seems like a foreign object, like a splinter, that the body may have surrounded. There is no fluid in it, just a hard tiny ball.

And that makes a lot of sense on the neck, but the cannon bone?

My guys have had similar hard bumps and when from bug bites they can last a REALLY LONG TIME before they go down. One also has some bumps caused by splinters (I had the Vet aspirate them), and those have never gone away from his neck. It is a bit unusual to have a cluster of bumps like that, which looks a bit like the "splinters" area, though yours covers a larger area than on my horse.

How long's a really long time? He got another cluster on his girth over the weekend, and the others are still there. Wondering if it would be worth having them checked out or if it's nothing.

I have something similar to this on my gelding. Did you find out what it was?
