Last week my 26yo TB Gelding was really lethargic during our trail ride so I got off and noticed he was passing a small amount of urine without even seeming to notice. As soon as we got back to the barn he was desperate to get into his stall and voided his bladder copiously several times in a row (normal color and flow), sometimes pawing. When his temperature spiked at 103.2 I called the vet who took blood and did a urine catch. The whole episode was over by the time the vet left. The tests were normal except for a mildly elevated creatinine level and very dilute urine. I was worried, however, because I had my horse at the hospital 6 weeks ago for fungal keratitis and subsequent enucleation. There, his doses of Banamine were regulated by his kidney/creatinine function. The vet said he couldn't tell what this episode was caused by, but perhaps a tick bite was likely. We put my horse on 4 days of Penicillin. He's been a bit picky with his grain but has been drinking (and peeing) normally. I'm concerned at how suddenly it came on and if I can expect future recurrences, or if this is a sign his kidneys were damaged during the treatment for his eye. Any ideas?

I don't see any proof of kidney damage in your post and the temperature may be normal for a horse during a trail ride, depending on conditions. Ticks seem unlikely but I really am not sure what was going on except he was needing his stall reallllllly badly. Just reading it sends me to the Men's room.

We have an aged gelding in our barn that has uncontrolled urination. He is currently being treated by a vet for bladder stones. Here is my question; When I clean his stall I swear I smell yeast. Am I insane?
