I would keep sterile gauze, iodine solution, some kind of tape, dressing, wraps, ointments, fly repellent, ask around and find what others keep or use the most of! |

Hello Dee, We have a whole article on this subject and more importantly several articles on how to use them. Check it out at: The Horseman's Advisor: Equine Diseases: First Aid |

I would like to know if there are any good first aid books out there. Would like to have one at the barn in case of emergency before I could get my vet out. Any suggestions? |

I wholly recommend you back up and use our first aid section. The 13 articles make a book of over 50 pages of the very latest information on first aid in horses. If you would like to print it out and place it is a note book that would be fine. DrO |

I gotta concur with Dr. O Susan. I just received a book for Christmas on "how to be your own vet (sometimes)'. It's a very informative, well written book with lots of photos but, it was very, very expensive and after looking through it over the past few weeks, I can honestly say there isn't anything in the book that I couldn't have found on this site and this site continues to grow with new posts and threads of invaluable information daily, so what you have here is a comprehensive, completely up to date on line encyclopaedia of horse health and training advice, and a whole lot more. |

I do love this site and all the information you can find on it. I was just tryng to be lazy and not have to print and organize everything. Guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and print, print, print! |

Thank you Sherri. One of the format changes we are currently working on is "printable versions" of each article that does not have all the other stuff on it. DrO |

With respect to DrO's list, I also trail ride and always carry my first aid kit in my saddle bag. It contains 4" sterile telfa pads, 4" gauze rolls, vetwrap, first aid ointment, livestock thermometer, soap, antibacterial solution, cotton balls, medical tape, moleskin, small gauze pads, a large (60cc) syringe, bute tablets, tube of electrolytes, and safety pins. I also carry antacids and aspirin for humans. All this packs up neatly in one of those lunch totes and never leaves my saddle bag except for use or to replace items. I check my bag at the start of every riding season and replenish supplies. In my trail club I have become the "go to gal" for first aid although most everyone carries some variation of the above. I will be adding bandage scissors and a stethoscope this year. I haven't seen this addressed in this forum but I also carry a survival kit. This contains iodine tablets, light, candles, large plastic garbage bags, compass, waterproof matches and holder, waterproof pad and pen, identification, granola bars, whistle, 50' of cord, small amount of first aid supplies, and emergency blanket. I carry this on my person so if I'm separated from my horse I have the essentials with me. Hope this helps others out there. Happy trails. |
