Dr. O
This is my first experience of having a pregnant mare since I have become an adult. My Dad took care of all the breeding and foaling. Even though I have had experience with horses in other aspects, I guess you would have to call me a rookie. I bought a mini mare out of the sale that was already bred. As fat as she was, due in May-August, I checked her bag and noticed a knot about the size of a saucer in front of her bag. Could that be a hernia, if so, what do you suggest?

Could be, so I suggest you have soemone look at it who can tell for sure. If it is a hernia treatment will vary on the size and depth of the hernia. It is normal for some mares to get some edema in front of the bag as foaling nears, but this seems a little early for that unless the foaling dates are off.

Your right. We had the Vet come out to unsuture another mare that we bought at the track. I had him look at the mini and he said that's what it was, edema. He said the mare was due to foal in April instead of May-August. The previous owners had over 100 mini's in a pasture in the Tennessee area and must have got her mixed up with another mare. I hope they didn't make the same mistake with the stud they bred her to!
