Our hayloft (over center aisle, open on either side to horses) has been invaded by fleas. The cats have been front-lined. One commercial pest removal company was called; they said they would not spray around the horses, period. A co-worker called a second company that will spray. I am against doing this without full knowledge of the possible negative affects of the chemicals used.
The products are "CONQUER" active ingredients;esfenvalerate, contains petroleum distillates (is residual)..."EXCITE R" Pyrethrins, Pipcronyl Butoxide (Technical)..."GENTROL" S-Hydroprene CAS #65733-18-8. ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED.

Welcome, Paul. Are you spraying an empty loft before you put hay in? Do you have turn out for the horses, or will they be in the barn?
Why not just treat the horses with a Spot-on product? Fleas are around everywhere, but I haven't noticed them on horses, much, although in CA, I'd never seen so many ticks on horses as I did there . . . Just BUNCHES of them on the horses that were out in the mountainside pasture . . . and I mean B-U-N-C-H-E-S of them . . . which I dutifully picked off for hours at a time . . .

Welcome Paul,
The Conquer and Excite R are pyrethrins which are in your fly repellents that you spray directly on your horse. The Hydroprene is a insect growth regulator and most of these are quite nontoxic to mammals with some types approval as a fly control feed additive. But these are poisons that if misused can harm your horse.

If the loft floor is carefully sprayed while it is empty and there are no horses in the barn and all feedstuffs, feed buckets, and water buckets covered and a tarp laid down before hay stacked back on the sprayed floor I would not expect any adverse consequences. It may be safe to do a lot less than this but since we don't know how the chemicals will be applied I don't see how we can judge.

Our property in Wa. State was infested with fleas. They were a constant battle. I sprayed around the house and the places the dogs normally frequented - within a month there were no fleas. We moved 10 years later and there were still no fleas. I don't know if they would work in a hay loft - if fleas live there perhaps the nematodes could too. It would certainly be worth a try. The nematodes are just mixed with water and sprayed.
