A horse I had in for training was unable to canter to the right under saddle, but could do it on longe or loose...Was later found to have EPM...she found this out from a farrier who was involved with testing that was done on a large number of horses who had EPM. They were studied to see if simular symptoms would show up, inability to canter to right was one of them. Was just wondering if you had heard of this before? Also we have heard that the test for EPM is as expensive as the treatment, so vets are treating instead.

Hello Tricia,
Yes a horse with EPM may have this difficulty but so will any horse that is lame, is weak for any reason, or in some cases it seems like many horses are one sidded when they begin training. The bottom line is that it is not a diagnostic for EPM. See Equine Diseases: Nervous System: EPM, Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis for symptoms and diagnosis of EPM.
